I won’t recap the lyrical barbs traded between the Kendrick and Drake, but it has me thinking about how subject matter experts can borrow a page from the Toronto and Cali representatives. ⁣
⁣
Here’s three things that stood out to me:⁣
⁣
🎯WORDCRAFT⁣
It doesn’t matter which side of this debate you’re on, seeing Drizzy and K-Dot go at each other word for word is like being at a Wimbledon match. Your head whips back and forth following the ball to see where it lands next. They carefully select and string words together for meaning and impact. ⁣
⁣
Author’s take note: It’s not just the words, but the skill and clever usage. ⁣
⁣
🎯VERSES & FLOW⁣
Both rappers are blessed with cadence and delivery. And I can tell who got As in English and who learned good grammar and then decided to break the rules. ⁣
⁣
Authors take note: Pay attention to your sentences length (variation is a love language). Techniques, like alliteration, assonance and consonance aren’t reserved for poets. Give your audience a dope reading (or listening) experience. ⁣
⁣
🎯STORYTELLING & STRATEGY⁣
Kendrick and Drake built their careers on being master storytellers; and each one is cocky-confident (is this a thing?) in their ability. Plus, they know timing and tension is everything. They’ve had fans in a chokehold wondering who’s going to deliver the next powerful mini-saga and punchline. ⁣

Authors take note: Tell compelling stories, use descriptive language and know when to strike like the cobra. ⁣
⁣
These two rappers are unmatched. Period. And I’ll continue to eat popcorn and watch this thing play out. ⁣
⁣

Like you’re bulletproof. ⁣
⁣
Do you want to show that you’re qualified—either via experience or education? Duh. Of course. But to play big, you don’t have to make them seem small.
⁣
As an expert author, the goal is always connection. ⁣Be vulnerable. Transparent. Real.
⁣
That’s one way to be unmatched, especially when your competition is using 50-dollars words, their idea is hidden by bloated jargon and they appear to be unapproachable. ⁣

Anyway, ever since then, I leaned into what made me different, including using humor, pop culture and my authentic writing voice. ⁣
⁣
